10-year-old girl tests positive for bird flu in Vietnam

A ten-year-old girl tested positive for the bird flu virus Wednesday, Phan
Van Tu, director of the laboratory at the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh
City said.

Vo Thi Ngoan, from Long An province, was in a critical condition and only
able to breathe with the assistance of a respirator, said Ha Manh Tuan,
the deputy director of Hospital of Pediatrics in Ho Chi Minh City.

Her family raised dozens of chickens that suddenly died of bird flu at the
beginning of the year, Tuan said.

The test result of a sample taken from a 39-year-old woman, also from Long
An province, who died of suspected bird flu Saturday night is not
available yet, Phan Van Tu said.

Bird flu has so far been confirmed to have killed nine people and infected
three others since outbreaks reoccurred in Vietnam in mid-December.

Two siblings, whose brother has already died of the disease, are the first
to make a recovery from the disease in the current outbreak.

Nguyen Thanh Hung, 42, who tested positive to bird flu last Tuesday, has
fully recovered after nearly two weeks of treatment at the Institute of
Tropical Diseases in Bach Mai hospital in Hanoi, a doctor of the institute
said.

"If there is no change, Hung will be discharged this Friday," the doctor
said on condition of anonymity.

Hung's 36-year-old brother, Nguyen Viet Hung, who also tested positive to
bird flu, was in good condition and was receiving outpatient treatment in
Thai Binh province, the doctor said.

"Thanks to the intensive treatment and proper diet, both patients have
recovered their health," the doctor said.

Since the end of last year, bird flu has spread to 25 provinces with 454
outbreaks. More than 610,000 poultry have died or been culled, according
to the latest report released by department of animal health of the
Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The SPDC troops gang-raped the 2 women and later shot both of them dead in the forest about 4 kilometres east of Murng Khun village in Murng Khun village tract, Murng-Kerng township. Some time later, some SPDC troops were heard telling villagers that they had raped and killed 2 women because they were wives of Shan soldiers.
